Koh Yao Noi is also great for exploring by mountain bike. You leave the main road and head off along dirt tracks, winding your way through rubber plantations, rice paddies and the forest. There are a few climbs and descents, but nothing too difficult. Along the way, you’ll come across buffalo in the rice fields, children waving to you and lovely views of the islands in Phang Nga Bay. You can stop for a coconut by the roadside or a swim on a deserted beach, then set off again at your own pace.
Level: suitable for those of average fitness. The interior of the island is fairly flat, whilst the forest trails are more challenging
Mountain bike hire: the team at Apollonia Resort can arrange this for you
Set off early in the morning or in the late afternoon, as it gets very hot very quickly
From May to October, during the rainy season, the trails can be muddy
A helmet is recommended
What to bring: plenty of water, sun cream, mosquito repellent and some cash
